Los Angeles County
Los Angeles County is located in the southwestern portion of California. European explorers were in the area as early as 1769, and in 1850 Los Angeles County was established. It has ranged in size from 34,520 square miles to its present size of 4,084 square miles. It is now the most heavily populated county in the United States with nearly ten million people.
The county government is run by the Board of Supervisors which is made up of five people who are elected to four year terms. Because of the small nature of the government, each person on the board represents approximately two million people. Within the county there are eighty-eight cities, each with its own city council. In addition to those cities, there are a large number of unincorporated communities that are governed by the Board of Supervisors. This government oversees the budget of over twenty-two billion dollars.
Los Angeles County has seventy miles of Pacific coast property. The two primary seaports along this expanse are the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach These two ports handle over a quarter of the container traffic that enters the United States making them, arguably, the most important port in the country.
There are many options for recreation to be found within Lost Angeles County. Some of these are the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, the LA Arboretum and Botanic Garden, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
